319 - Friday

I became aware of the phenomenon of "date night" not long after I first arrived in Sunnydale. It was my first week in the States and I was determined to establish myself as an authority figure for both Buffy and Faith and, I suppose, make good on the trust that the Council had shown in giving me the assignment. With all the group gathered in the library, I began mapping out a training schedule for the Slayers and when I got to Friday nights, the idea was met with outright disgust. Giles, of course, had seen the training plan and had neglected to mention this possibility to me.

And during my brief former dalliances with relationships-- never something that could be considered remotely easy or simple in my particular line of work-- there were regular outings, just as any normal couple might have. That is, if normal couples had their dates occasionally interrupted by vampires, demons and other assorted monstrosities. Date nights also cropped up in the form of other people's unavailability on those evenings.

Now that I am once again involved in a relationship, I know the importance of regular social activity to the healthy continuance of such. No matter how busy or how complicated the two individual lives can be, priority must be made to maintaining the ways in which those lives can stay connected. Date nights are a crucial part of things.

As such, I am loath to break those engagements, but from time to time, it is unavoidable. This particular Friday, for instance, a case has led me into pursuing a time-honored traditional pursuit of the detective: the stakeout. In my case, an alarmingly fast-growing doomsday cult has been recruiting members from the city's homeless population both willingly and not. While I have the location of their headquarters, I have no way in and no intelligence on what might lay inside, other than the fact whoever is within those walls is reputed to be planning something big and nasty for very soon.

So, not seeing any way to delay, I did find myself forced to call Gwen and request a raincheck for our date. I wished her well and that I hoped she would have a good time, as I was going to spending my Friday with a pair of high-powered binoculars, a laser microphone and a box of pizza in my Motel 6 room across the street from the cult's building.

That will be my Friday, alas.
