There was a surprising lack of paperwork in my inbox that day, although considering that our side of this particular Apocalyptic battle was practically holding its breath for the moment, I'd found myself with a good deal of time to do my actual job. Then again, as I scanned through the latest stack of reports from the student tutors regarding their recent sessions, the job was as useful a tool to the battle as any other weapon, if wielded properly.
My eyes flicked over to the antique clock on the wall. Two in the afternoon. Glancing then at the schedule as posted on my computer's screen, it was confirmed for me that my appointment was indeed, running late.
Considering everything I'd heard regarding young miss Anelise Pendleton, that didn't surprise me in the least. After a bit of fumbling, I'd managed to cull the electronic version of Ms. Pendleton's student file from the main database. If I'd gotten a hold of the physical original, I was sure it would be the length of a bible, considering the size of the file I'd opened.
Myriad references to discipline problems... to disrespect of both fellow students and of faculty and staff... not to mention politely oblique references to the young woman's more public antics and other notes regarding what may have been Ms. Pendleton's pecadilloes that were so disdainfully vague and obfuscating that only an Englishman could have written them.
Well, it wasn't as if I had my own rebellious streak and darker side, but it did seem that Ms. Pendleton would have been a handful even for me, even at my nadir.
But it did give me some reason for optimism. A straight-laced, by-the-ancient-scroll Watcher scion (myself, at the same age, for example) would never agree to what I was going to offer. But 'Ana' Pendleton just might.
At last, there was the knock on the door.
"Come," I said to the door, and waited.
