206 - What do you live for?

New books have a smell, not dissimilar to a new car. Whether it is the paper itself, or the glue in the binding, I'm not sure, but it is distinctive. Old books are even more remarkable. The leather and gild on the cover, the brown-yellow pages and the old, fading ink. The opening of an old book is a something that touches every one of the senses.

There is a reason that humans have been drinking wine for thousands of years. Again, it is an experience that satisfies the vision, the palate, even the ear (one of the reasons we have the tradition of clinking glasses together). A fine wine elevates even the most humble of repasts when properly paired. In the realm of microwaveable entrees, for pot roast and pepper steak, I suggest a good full-bodied Syrah, while for the ubiquitous variation on fettucine alfredo with grilled chicken, choose a Chardonnay to cut through the richness and make sure to serve at the proper temperature.

Puzzles are meant to be solved. That is their purpose, and their reason for existence. That is a truth known to anyone who pursues knowledge, whether they be physicist, archaeologist or translator of ancient demonic languages. There is a trail to follow every time, a step-by-step path that leads from one point to another, taking the intrepid detective from the completely undecipherable page to the proper antecedents and relatives of the letter forms to the syntax and grammar and at last to the completed page. At that moment, it is highly tempting to shout "Eureka", I must tell you.

One of the most recent discoveries I have made is, surprisingly, the physically satisfying benefits of getting into a good fight. Although at the very heart of it, violence is merely a tool of the work that I and my circle undertake, a means to an end, whether those ends be intimidation, information or incarceration. I have done battle with all manner of implement, from sword to shotgun, and I can still speak highly of bareknuckled fisticuffs.

There is a spot at the base of a woman's throat, one I have found highly susceptible to even the slightest attention, whether it be from breath or lips or even teeth. A gasp follows, an intake of breath that is sharp and warm and vibrates just slightly under my mouth when I have been the cause of it. The shiver that comes next catches from her skin onto mine, and it is moments before she folds her limbs around me to pull me close.

One finds all manner of enjoyable things to live for.
