Wesley couldn't help but pay particular attention when Buffy expressed so much concern for Angel's... well, perhaps not his well-being, exactly, as there was no implication of the usual sort of danger. But she was certainly concerned for him and his situation. The whole span of the information Wesley's former charge had delivered was still daunting, but there were still only two or three facts required to move Wesley to action. Firstly, an old friend had done the asking. No matter what the history, Wesley respected Buffy and still harboured Watcherly regard for the Slayer. Secondly, the request had been made on behalf of a friend just as old, but a great deal more dear. Lastly, Wesley could help, or at least he believed he might be able, and so he had to.

Dialing the phone number Buffy had provided, Wesley sat at his desk in the Endeavour Agency offices and waited.

Angel had managed to irritate Kara into a state of temper within hours of her being released from the hospital and returning home. He had to admit, he was skilled at driving her crazy. Though that wasn't really the politically correct terms now was it? Not that Angel was ever a politically correct kind of guy. He left her be and headed back to the apartment where he could stalk the garage in case she tried to sneak out one of the cars. Mind you, with her navigation skills, he was sure he would hear her even if he didn't see her. That being said, he was willing to ask Faith or Buffy to go out and explain calmly that she could not drive herself if she happened to try this during the day. Though, he wasn't sure which would be better to send. He just knew Cordy wasn't the person for the job.

When his phone rang he didn't recognize the number, but he did notice the area code. Los Angeles. Hm. "This is Angel."

The voice was familiar, but the tone was not. Angel's voice sounded... tired, at least to Wesley's ears.

"Angel, it's Wesley. I, er, wanted to check in."

He didn't know how his old friend would react to the idea of Wesley's being encouraged to cheer him up, so he played it close to the vest.

Wesley. Wes. Angel wasn't expecting it to be Wesley. A lot of time and distance had passed since they last saw each other. He couldn't help but smile though. A tired smile, yes, but a smile. He'd been thinking about Wes, Fred, Gunn and Lorne lately.

"Wes, it's been awhile. It's good to hear from you. How are things in Los Angeles?" He's curious as to what all is going on there. When he left LA it was in good hands, and he has no doubt it continues to be so.

Wes and Gwen? Right, don't think about that. Why did Buffy tell him that? Now that was all he could think of.

"Too long," he replied, and it was the truth. As settled as Wesley was getting with the new status quo, things weren't the same. He of all people knew how everything changed, over time, but it didn't stop him from missing those days. "Going well. Not sure if Buffy's mentioned it, but we hung out a new shingle for a 'detective agency', if that's all right."

"Of course it's all right. It's good that you guys are working together." With Gwen. Stop that Angel. He shook off that thought and focused on what was important. "Any interesting cases?" Most of Angel's work was following leads from the bar he worked at. Mostly vampires and so forth. He couldn't help but wish for a paranoia demon or a cult summoning a demon from hell with a virgin sacrifice. You don't find a lot of virgin sacrifices in New York anymore. Of course, right now, his main focus was on his daughter and his granddaughter. "Buffy's been catching me up. You should see her with Addie. I don't know why she doubted her maternal instincts."

"Well, I think we all learned the lesson that we're much more effective as a group." Wesley thought he detected a hesitation in Angel's question somewhere, but decided not to press the issue. His old friend, he knew, would say what he wanted when he felt it. Wesley nodded into the receiver. "First one seems to be a doozy. Some sort of demon cult making sacrifices around the city. Seems to be connected to something larger, so we're all chasing down leads."

He smiled. "I confess to having trouble imagining Buffy as especially maternal, but by our conversations, she certainly seems to have done her share of maturing." A pause before Wesley went on. "How is your... your family, Angel? And how are you?"

Angel could picture her as the maternal type before he saw her with Addie. Maybe that was because at one point in his life the idea of the married life with Buffy was his picture of Shanshu. He's long since given up on redemption. When he goes to work now it's simply to help. There was no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

There was a part of him that really wanted to bring Wes up to speed on the Cordelia situation. It's not his secret to share, but he couldn't help but feel that Wesley could figure this out. He was the guy who mastered the books after all. He'd have to put some more pressure on Cordy to make her situation known, at the very least, among the friends that considered her family. When asked about how his family was he paused for a moment. Things were complicated. Wasn't that the case with everyone these days? "Darla and Connor returned to Quortoth in exchange for Connor's other family to be given a second chance at life. They would have died by now from natural causes. It's hard to deal with some days, but having Kara and Addie to focus on helps. I'm tired some days, and worried others. Kara, my daughter, she's having some problems so she's resting up in a hospital. Darla leaving really did a number on her. I didn't expect to have grandchildren, but it helps to have family ties here. How are you? Buffy mentioned you were seeing Gwen."

Wesley had to clasp a hand over the mouthpiece, lest Angel hear him snicker. That was Angel, as he remembered the man-- reticent to a fault, but once he was spurred to speak, there was no stopping him. Idly, he wondered if some of Buffy's infamous ability to ramble had somehow rubbed off on Angel back in Sunnydale.

"I see," was his first response. To the best he could hear in the vampire's voice, Angel was not calling to hear platitudes and reassurances. Angel was doing well, and Wesley could help best by simply listening. "Family is amazingly important, Angel. It makes me feel a great deal better to know you have some around, even with the difficulties."

He did let a chuckle slip. "Yes, yes I am. That's not an issue, I trust?"
